Typical Day
A typical day at Carolina Friends School Summer Programs involves lots of fun and activities!
First camp day:
Every Monday is considered a first day, so we have plenty of helpers available to get you and your child located in the right classroom. We also send out a map and directions by email as well as providing it on our website. Extended Day for ages 4-8 meets in the Lower School and for ages 8-14 in the gym building. When you receive your confirmation letter, the building is noted on the form.
For Extended Day campers, we ask that you come into the buildings and sign in your child. Afternoon extended day participants sign in themselves with parents signing them out at pick up time. Those not signed up for Extended Day options should wait until 8:55am to go to the classroom as the teacher is not responsible for supervising campers prior to that. If you drop your child off unattended, we will have him or her moved to Extended Day and signed in. You will be charged a daily fee of $10. Better to sign up for a full week of early Extended Day (8am to 9am) for only $18 and peace of mind.
Arrival and settling in:
Campers arrive in the classroom at 9:00am. Those enrolled in Extended Day will be escorted by assistants to their classrooms. Because many of our campers come in at different times in the mornings, we usually do not begin until around 9:15am. Campers then settle in which involves quietly sitting in a small circle. There will be a moment of silence as campers, counselors, and teachers make the transition from the busy bustle of arriving at camp to planned camp programs.
After settling in, the staff reviews what the events of the day will be as well as allow the campers to talk about their own impressions and experiences. It is important for the staff to know what the camper is bringing into the workshop -- what happened that morning? Or last night? Is there a significant event the youngster wants to talk about? Tuning into each other helps the camper and staff make a smooth transition.
Activities:
The activities vary according to the workshop and what projects t he campers are involved in. After allowing time for the group to reconnect, the workshops sally forth on their projects, whether it be making forts, practicing a hoop shot, working on a necklace, preparing a play, designing costumes or sets, creating a dance or elf house. Around 10:30am or earlier, there is a snack break. Campers need to bring their own snack & a water bottle (to be refilled regularly, especially during our hot summer days!)
Sometimes we have visitors from our forest who want to join our camps!Snack Bar:
We have a snack bar that is open at 10:30 AM for morning snacks. We offer low cost items such as chips, bagels, fruit in season, or juice. We do not sell soft drinks.
Campers visit the snack bar with their group. It is located in the gym building next to the Summer Program Office. Campers can purchase yogurt bars, Pop Tarts, Cup of Soup, apples, granola bars, cookies, goldfish snacks, animal crackers, fruit bars, bagels (toasted!), and yogurt.
At lunch time, campers can get Cup of Soup, chips, chocolate bars (small ones), lollipops, frozen ice pops, and popcorn. We also serve hot dogs (all beef franks) on buns, pizza slices, grilled cheese sandwiches, quesadillas, and even noodles and tomato sauce.
If you have food suggestions, send email to cfssummer@nc.rr.com
Field Trips:
Some groups take field trips on our minibuses. There are seat belts for all and the capacity is 14. The drivers are the instructors who must be over 21 and have a driving review with our assistant principal. All drivers have a cell phone and leave with an additional chaperone (either a college-age student, counselor-in-training, or high school assistant).
Most field trips are in the Durham-Chapel Hill area, especially in Duke Forest, Eno River State Park, and Hillsborough. Parents sign a field trip release form when registering campers. Instructors will notify campers and parents of upcoming field trips usually with a letter or email notice. Kidspace (ages 6 - 8) goes swimming twice weekly (Tuesday and Thursdays from 1 to 2:30) at Camp New Hope.
Lunch time
The time of lunch is taken at the instructor's discretion, usually around noon. Younger groups usually eat outdoors in the play area by the Lower School. There are picnic tables, trash receptacles, easy access to bathrooms, and a play area for whole body movement and socializing. Those campers needing additional supplies may visit the gym Snack Bar with a counselor-in training or instructor.
Older groups (ages 8 and up) eat either outdoors next to their buildings or go to the gym and eat on tables indoors. There are foosball tables, a snack bar, drink machines (Gatorade), rest rooms, and a large gym to shoot baskets. Some groups prefer to stay by their buildings and use the picnic tables and facilities there (we also have drink machines by those buildings).
SPECIAL EVENTS - at midweek the camp hosts a camp wide ice cream party !!
Friday Performances:
The big highlight of each week is our Friday performances by other camps and visiting performers. The kids love to show what they have learned and the audience enjoys it too. Most performances take place after lunch; some may take place before lunch. Instructors will send letters to parent or notify by email or post the schedule on line. Please check with your instructor for times and dates.
End of day:
At the end of the day, the campers help with clean-up, settle down for a few minutes, and then are accompanied to the pick-up area or to Extended Day if enrolled. Each instructor receives a roster of those who are in Extended Day. Pick up is by the circular drive next to the water tower. Campers will be there by 2:55pm for pick up. Parents can simply drive up and pick up.
If you are late picking up, we will enroll your child in Extended Day for which you will becharged a $10 fee per hour. Better to sign up for extended day until 4:00pm for only $20 a week and have peace of mind.
When it's time for pick up, campers are taken by our staff to the drop off/pick up area in the circle driveway. They can wait under a shaded enclosure (ages 8 - 13) or by the shaded playground (ages 6 - 8) next to Lower School (first building as you drive in). Our staff will wait until your child is picked up. If you are running late, we will put your child into Extended Day. PICK UP IS 3:00pm
