Christine Amabile works during the school year for the Chapel Hill Carrboro City Schools as a first grade teacher at Carrboro Elementary and for Carolina Friends as the Durham Early School extended day teacher. Her passions are art and science. In her spare time, she enjoys painting, writing, making music, and playing capoeira. This will be Christine's sixth summer with the Carolina Friends Summer Programs.
Julie Bailey is currently a free-lance web designer. Her background is in software user interface design, specializing in user-centered design methods. Julie has an MA degree in human factors psychology from New Mexico State University, and attended UC Santa Cruz towards a doctorate in cognitive psychology. She has diverse professional experience, previously working in Silicon Valley for IBM, Adobe Inc., Tandem Computers, and Interval Research. She is a mother of two daughters who attend CFS's Lower School. Julie will lead our Web Design workshops for the third year. She has also redesigned and developed this summer's CFS Summer Programs web pages!
Chris Becom has been studying and performing since he was 9 years old. Early on he focused primarily on learning western art/classical music and rock-n-roll on the piano and guitar. After starting college he fell in love with world music from Africa, Latin America as well as the music from his home state of North Carolina. Early guidance from many friends, musicians and teachers from North Carolina and all over the world helped mold Chris' musical ear for many unique types of musical traditions. Chris has performed as a freelance musician since these early college days. He has also worked with the UNC-Greensboro Dance Department, a number of Latin Jazz Ensembles, a West African Drumming Ensemble based out of NYC, and for various concerts for local education institutions like Carolina Friends School. As a graduate student at the University of Michigan, Chris fused and developed these professional interests as he studied education, music and ethnomusicology. His geographical areas of teaching expertise include much of the Caribbean and Mexico, West and Central Africa, and North Carolina based musics such as Piedmont Blues, Appalachia, Heavy Metal and Indie Rock. He is currently a middle school music and Spanish teacher at the Montessori School of Raleigh and is developing a unique curricular approach to teaching music known as drumLIFE ( www.drumLIFE.org ). Chris will always be a student of world music as he studies and works with great local musicians such as Bradley Simmons and Beverly Botsford whenever possible.
Cesanne Berry, M.A. Elementary Ed., is the Head Teacher of DES and has taught at CFS for 19 years. She was also the Creative Arts In Public Schools ( CAPS) director (program of the Durham Arts Council and the Durham Public Schools) for five years. Much of Cesanne’s inspiration comes from immersion in the Reggio Emilia approach (exemplary municipal preschools in Italy).
Betsy Blair (yB) holds degrees in creative writing, design and dance. She has also studied art throughout her life. She was awarded the Raleigh Medal of Arts, the Hitchings Award for Service to the Art of Dance, and many local and state grants. Recently, Betsy has divided her time between the design and production of teacher workbooks for leading educational dance activities and the creation of watercolors or sale. She has been creating with young people for many years both as a dancer/choreographer and as a visual artist, working in various settings in Raleigh, through the Durham Arts Council, and on WRAL-TV’s "Frog Hollow Program” (playing “The Sprite"). Michael Bonsignore has been teaching in the Lower School at Carolina Friends School for 29 years. He has championed the Design Technology program over the past 15 years. He loves to play old-time music, build things, garden and travel.Jean Cerasani has been teaching visual arts to both adults and children for over 26 years and is a practicing artist working in clay, fabric, and color, lots of color. She has experience as an interior designer and costume designer for theater and dance productions. Her teaching experience includes working with children with learning disabilities, as well as energetic young artists. She currently offers classes to adults and children in the Piedmont area. Jean will teach Watercolor & Drawing, Batik Blast, Pull Up A Chair as well as Art to Wear and Clothing Collage.
Carly Chapman Though this is her first year joining the stellar staff at CHES Summer Camp, Carly Chapman is no stranger to Carolina Friends School… She is a distinguished CFS Graduate (94), a happily dedicated teacher (of almost 8 years!!) at Campus Early School, and a very proud Lower school parent. Prior to joining CFS staff in 2000, Carly attended UNCG where she earned her BS degree in Human Development and Family Studies along with her B-K Teaching License (99’). Following graduation, Carly worked at Frank Porter Graham Child Development Center before once again joining the beloved CFS community that knows and she loves so well! Carly is more than happily married to her husband of 8 years Mike, and is an adoring mama of their two precious kiddos Jonah (age 6) and Julia (age 2).
Jamie Charles, a working comic artist, graduated from UNC-G in Fine Arts. Besides exhibiting his own work, Jamie now works at CFS as an art instructor for middle school students. He has taught a wildly popular Comic Design camp for the past six summers. Jamie is also a champion Capture the Flag leader, having led his workshop groups to many victories. Jamie offers private lessons in drawing and art.
Karen Clark grew up outside of New York City and coached gymnastics throughout high school and college. She majored in marine science at the University of South Carolina and attained her Masters Degree in Biology at Boston University studying marine animal behavior. She is now in her 4th year teaching middle school science at Immaculata Catholic School here in Durham where she is the yearbook coordinator and plays the flute in the liturgical choir. In her spare time she likes to read mysteries, go to the beach, and play with her mini schnauzer, Heidi. Karen will lead the LEGO driven climate camp Climate Crunch.
Scott Crews is a musician. He teaches drum lessons throughout the Chapel Hill area, and performs around the Southeast with various groups. Having recently finished a four year term as Assistant Director of the St. Thomas More Afterschool program, Scott looks forward to working with the youth this summer at the CFS Summer Program, as well as at The Center for Education, Imagination and the Natural World, at Timberlake Farm where he is the Earth Guide for students & teachers during the school year. He also enjoys being an active environmentalist, naturalist, as well as an amateur herbalist, mycologist, and nutritionist. Also an entrepreneur, Scott owns his own vitamin business. He additionally dabbles in wizardry and worm farming. He's looking forward to teaching Fort Building and Drum Flow .
Heather Cramer is an Atlanta artist who has recently moved to Durham. She has taught art to all ages for many years, and delights in seeing children discover and celebrate their creative spirits with workshops that encourage fun filled artistic production, self discovery, and community building. Her own artistic journey includes painting, drawing, sculpture, graphic design, children's book illustration, and so much more! "Life is an endless flow of creative possibilities!" Heather will teach Ripples of Peace, Earth Keepers , and Pop Up Pages.
Charna D’Ardenne currently teaches at Forest View Elementary School. Charna hails from the Bay area via Harvard University and other interesting stops along the way. She is an avid environmentalist and prefers the outdoors which is why she jumped at the opportunity to lead two workshops along with Tim Wells: Fort Building Sessions 2 and 3 from June 23 to July 4.
Melissa Eccleston is currently the Athletic Director for Bethesda Christian Academy. During the last couple of years, she has organized team sport camps and sport clinics. She has worked with young people and athletics for 10 years. Melissa is a new resident of North Carolina and a newlywed. Melissa will lead our Sportsters camp and Summer Sports, Session 8.
Benita Edgerton is currently a returning UNC-CH student majoring in Child Development and Family Studies. She is also working as a nanny and was previously a Preschool teacher for 2 years. She likes to teach through hands-on activities and allow the children lead discussions and activities. Her goal is to establish her own preschool some day. Presently, Benita works at the North Carolina Museum of Life and Science in Durham as an educator handling animals and invertebrates and also teaching about dinosaurs. In Carrboro, she also works at the Afterschool Art Immersion Program through the Carrboro ArtsCenter. There children learn about different forms of art and enjoy everything from African Drumming to Movie Making. She also volunteers at KidZu Children's Museum on Franklin Street in Chapel Hill. Benita loves to aid the children's interactions and learning through play in the traveling exhibits. Benita will lead our five to six year old workshops all summer from Bugs to Going Green
Hal Engler lives in Mebane, NC and is presently completing a degree in Music Education at North Carolina Central University. Hal has taught guitar lessons for many years and has played in various rock bands since high school. Now he is studying classical guitar with Baron Tymas at NCCU. After graduating with a political science degree from UNC-CH in 1986, Hal worked as a real estate broker and developer for 16 years. After leaving the business world in 2002, Hal played guitar full-time for two different rock bands (Hal Jones Band and Jaxon Jill) while teaching guitar lessons on the side. More recently, he taught remediation at Broadview Middle School in Burlington, NC, while still continuing to teach lessons and play music professionally. Hal is interested in all genres of music including classical, jazz, rock, blues and fiddle music. Hal likes working with kids and helping to cultivate their individual musical skills. Hal enjoys camping and playing music with his son Knox who is a violinist and a middle schooler at Carolina Friends School. Hal will teach Let’s Rock, Guitar Camp with Hal, and River Walking.
Christine Firpo has been the director of the Summer Programs for the past 12 years. Chris taught high school and college English and French courses, was a project director at Measurement Inc. for MCAT, and volunteered with Independent Animal Rescue. As a mother she sent her two children to summer camps (and selected all of their camps for them with minimal discussion) and attended several as a child. Her fondest memory was decorating a hat with pine cones at a 4H camp. Both of her children survived their summer experiences and have moved as far away as possible...one in Berkeley and the other in Boston. Neither of them have children yet so they can't possibly understand how important choosing a summer camp can be. . Cora Fishman has been making pottery for the past 10 years. She currently
works out of her studio in Hillsborough throwing pots as well as teaching ceramics classes for children and adults. Cora will lead Clay Crazy for ages 8-11 (Sessions 3 and 7) and Clay Magic for ages 6-8 (Session 6). See her schedule on her website at www.theturningearthpottery.com.Jan French is a fiber enthusiast who likes to share facts, fun and her fibers with children and adults from her travels in search of fibers. She focuses on the methods and tools used to make yarn and materials before the Industrial Revolution. Her interests include spinning, weaving, needlework, basketry and other crafts made from the natural and recycled materials. She is currently a substitute teacher and fibers resource assistant at the Carolina Friends School and an instructor for the Chapel Hill Homeschoolers Enrichment Program. Last year she was a Handwork Teaching Assistant at the Emerson Waldorf School. Jan leads the Fiber Artisans class.
Rachel Galper is a licensed elementary school teacher, art educator, writer, and storyteller recently located from upstate NewYork. Since leaving social work in 2000, she has been engaged in doing project-based learning across all content areas with youth and adults in public schools, museums, art centers, and human services organizations. She currently lives and works in the Triangle teaching mixed media, literary, and performing art as well as developmental reading. Rachel is guided and inspired by a deep commitment to hands-on and service learning, community building and nonviolence. This guides her efforts as an educator and the founder of a new initiative calledTransformations: Adventures in Peace Making. Rachel will teach DaVinci Dynamos (repeat from last summer), Creating Labyrinths, and Storytelling Troupe.
Miriam Granados came to the US from Spain for the first time in 1995 as an exchange teacher. She had taught in Spain and the UK before coming to the US. In NC, she has taught high school Spanish in public and private school. She was the CFS Upper school Spanish teacher from 1998 until 2001. Miriam worked for the Visiting International Faculty program for 4 years before returning to teaching in 2005. She is currently teaching ESL at Jordan High School in Durham. She loves working with immigrant students who are learning English. Miriam's interests are dance and travelling. These days she spends her free time with her husband and two young children, visiting parks, museums and friends with children! Miriam will help lead Kidspace: Session 2.
Jodie Hagenberger is a senior Ceramics major and Spanish minor at Berea College in Kentucky. She is potter in the school's Ceramics Apprenticeship Program and will be studying at Penland this summe,r as well as working as a full time employee in the pottery at Berea. She is a graduate of the Friends School (2005) where she first learned to throw from Rita Schiavone. This will be her third year working with the Carolina Friends School Summer Programs. She enjoys teaching others about clay and welcomes the opportunity to share such a timeless craft. Jodie plans to one day open her own pottery studio. Jodie will lead one section of Clay Magic for ages 6-8 and Kidspace: Session 8.
Sarah Haggerty is a seasoned environmental educator and an enthusiastic Carolina Friends School alumnus. She has a degree in Environmental Studies, and she has spent the last eight years teaching natural and cultural history. She is the former program director at Schoolhouse of Wonders, and she is currently running Orenda Nature Programs, a year round nature awareness program for children, teens, and adults. Sarah is thrilled to be back for another summer at Friends School having spent several summers here in the past leading various workshops. Sarah will work with Scott Crews in Fort Building in Session 7.
Julia Hartsell You may know Julia as one of the "Weaver Street hoopers." She has been bringing her handmade hoops to various community events, performing and teaching for nearly 7 years. Julia graduated with a degree in Religious Studies with a concentration in Art History from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. After completing college, she continued her exploration of various movement practices and visual arts. She has studied yoga, belly dancing, ceramics, photography and writing, but in 2001, fell in love with an oversized hoop. For nearly seven years, Julia has been developing her hoop dance, hoop craft and teaching techniques for both children and adults. She has performed and taught at arts organizations, schools, yoga centers, after-school programs, music festivals, private parties, fund-raisers, university dance programs and community events. In addition to her work with the art of hooping, Julia loves to dance, roller-skate, drum, stretch, sew, craft, walk in the woods, play games, cook, experience the gifts of the senses, listen to music, make new friends (of all species), and light things on fire (including her special fire hoop). Lisa Herndon is a newly retired Special Education teacher with 31 years experience working with learning-disabled and behavioral/emotionally-disabled children. She lived in Durham for more than 30 years before moving to the Rougemont area two years ago to enjoy the country life. She has two sons who she is very proud of. Lisa is an animal lover who owns two dogs, three cats and a horse named Amy. She enjoys many types of crafts including stain glass, mosaics, quilting and sewing projects to name a few. Lisa will teach Fiber Creations and Mosaics.
Lauren King began piano lessons in 3rd grade. She has played for 18 years now as well as singing in small groups and solos since 1995. In the fall of '07 Lauren began teaching elementary music including singing, dance, drama, and instruments. She is a long-time lover of music and theatre and will lead A Taste of Broadway this summer for ages 10 to 12. This camp is a two-week session.
Susan Kincaid has taught at CFS for the past 17 years and worked 14 in the Summer Programs. Besides being a short story writer, playwright, and actress, Susan heads the theater program for the Upper School at CFS, directing and producing shows three times a year. She will lead Backyard Broadway and Totally Theatrical for ages 8 – 11. Each camp is a two-week session.
Tom Latimer has his MA in teaching from Russell Sage College in New York and presently teaches second grade at Immaculata Catholic School in Durham. Thomas has taught at the Kantner School (aka St. Mary Catholic School). He has also been a director of Summer Programs and After-School Programs at various locations including the Jewish Community Center in Schenectady and the Kantner School. Tom plays the guitar and piano and lives in Chapel Hill. He will lead Kidspace: Sessions 2-7 as he did last year.
Tonie Lilley has been a public health educator, a free-lance writer and, most recently, a substitute teacher in Carolina Friends School's Early and Lower Schools, as well as in the Middle School. Tonie attended New Garden Friends School in Greensboro and is currently the mother of two Carolina Friends School students. Her first book, a novelette titled I Was A Teenage Werecat was published in April 2004. Tonie, an avid reader of fantasy and science fiction, looks forward to venturing into the world of imagination and myth with campers during Magical Quest. Tonie will also be sharing her lifelong cat fascination with campers in Crafty Cats.
Megan Lucchesi is a graduate of the Art Institute of Atlanta and holds a degree in illustration and fashion design. Currently she is working with local farmers markets, selling her own creations throughout North Carolina. Megan grew up within the south and has taken her love of art, the outdoors, animals and the "old" to create a unique, artistic environment. This will be her first year with Carolina Friends School and she will be teaching Garden Art, Outdoor Art, and Pull up a Chair.
Samantha Macy currently teaches at Triangle Day School. She attended school at Colorado State University and ASU in Boone. She has taught at TDS for the past five years, as well as at Durham Academy and several middle and elementary schools in Asheville area and Tennessee. Samantha is a potter and writer. Sam will lead Earth Arts in Session 5.
Carol Marcus started knitting at age 6! Her love of crafts helped her to decide to be an Occupational Therapist. As an OT, activities are part of therapy. Her clients work on knitting, crochet, weaving and macrame to help regain hand strength, fine motor coordination and upper extremity range of motion. Carol teaches in the Occupational Therapy Assistant program at Durham Technical Community College. All students learn those skills and more in the Therapeutic Media class. You will find Carol taking her knitting everywhere. She'll find herself at the movies, the airport or in a restaurant volunteering to teach anyone that approaches her to knit. Carol also teaches private classes at her home, has taught at Michaels craft store and most recently the Durham Public Library where there is an upcoming class, "Family Knitting" scheduled for the Spring. Carol will lead Fiber Arts class Session 3.
Hallie Montgomery (Chapel Hill Early School) is a native of Chapel Hill, NC. She attended Chapel Hill Early School and Lower School for a few years and then went on to public schools in Chapel Hill. She is glad to have had the opportunity to spend a year in Montpellier, France when she was a student. Hallie attended East Carolina University, where she studied Child Development and Family Relations with a concentration in Special Education and Spanish. In her work experience, Hallie is most proud of the time she taught in the Head Start program in CHCCS. She has enjoyed working with children with special needs and those who were English Language learners. Hallie is delighted to have rejoined the Carolina Friends School community. Hallie will lead several weeks at the Chapel Hill Early School Camp.
Zacki Murphy hails originally from NC but has lived in NYC and CA while pursuing her modeling career with the Ford Agency. Zacki returned to the area and is now operating a catering service as well as holding etiquette classes. You can read more about Zacki at http://www.zackimurphy.com/. Zacki will “host” the Cooking 101 class during Session 8.
Shannon O'Connor is a true believer of magic and fairies. She is a local artist, musician and mother. She works at the Chapell Hill Early School and loves to sing, dance, frolic in the woods and create art with children of all ages! A graduate of Parsons School of Design, Shannon has traveled around the country learning about environmental education, folk lore, dance and music. She is the mother of a 12 year old daughter. Shannon will lead one group of Fairy Worlds.
Kerry Paksoy is a graduate of UNC-Chapel Hill ('06) with degrees in Psychology and Social & Economic Justice. He is a Youth Trainer and mediator from the Dispute Settlement Center (www.disputesettlement.org ), the original community mediation center in North Carolina, founded in 1978. The Center helps individuals and groups of all ages handle conflict more effectively and constructively through mediation, facilitation and training. Kerry does work in the community schools, the community centers and Family Resource Centers of Orange County. In his free time he enjoys being on his feet (or hands) playing Capoeira.
Antwanna Pegues hails from Kinston, NC but has lived in Raleigh, NC for eight years. She received her BS degree in Finance at North Carolina Central University, and is currently in Graduate School at Strayer University in Education Administration. She is also teaching Career and Technical Education classes at Southern High School in Durham, NC. Antwanna teach all types of business classes which include computer applications, personal business and finance, digital communication, and e-commerce. One of her favorite things to do is ride on airplanes and travel to observe different cultures and relax. Antwanna will lead Cybertech.
Rosa Pena is a native of Honduras and has taught all levels from preschool to high school for over 20 years (9 in Honduras and over 11 here in Durham). She has a master degree in school administration; a bachelor of science in accounting and an associate degree in Early Childhood. She is fully bilingual in English and Spanish and she currently teaches Spanish at Immaculata Catholic School. Prior to this position she was director and teacher of Immaculata Catholic Early Learning Center. Rosa considers teaching a vocation and a ministry and believes in the dignity and uniqueness of each child and human being. She likes to teach using a lot of movement, hands-on activities and creativity. She is looking forward to spending part of this summer with the children enrolled in Latin Flavors. Rosa will teach Latin Flavors (a two-week cooking camp held twice this summer.)
Veda Renfrow is a musician, songwriter, poet, artist, performer, teacher, activist and media creator. Veda is a graduate of the University of New Mexico, receiving a BA in Media Arts, baccalaurette honors of summa cum laude and a Michael Costello Award in Media Arts. Veda’s video work has been screened at numerous events and festivals, both nationally and internationally. Since 2004, Veda has served on the board of ACME: Action Coalition for Media Education, as Treasurer and Director of Membership and assists with national conference planning. While in New Mexico, Veda was the office coordinator for New Mexico Media Literacy Project (NMMLP) contributing to the organization’s Catalyst Institutes by organizing and facilitating discussions about media and popular culture. Veda is co-producer of “Challenging the Debt Industry” about the impact predatory lending has on New Mexico communities. With experience in both production and education, Veda’s approach to media literacy and media education is one from the standpoint of “connection.” To understand the impact of media in our consumer culture, Veda believes one must first understand one’s own connection to, and participation in, that media culture. Veda will teach Video Productions I and Video Productions II this summer.
Tarenne Robertson, a mother and school psychologist, looks forward to returning to Carolina Friends Summer Camps for her second year. She is especially happy to be teaming up again with Tom Latimer for what are sure to be super fun Kidspace Camps! She will teach Kidspace: Sessions 1 and 4-8.
Becky Schoeneck has taught 4 - 6 graders in public schools and is currently teaching at Alamance Community College in the Early Childhood Education department. Becky taught Nature Trek, Art Sparks and Mystical Fairies for the past four summers and joins us this year for two weeks to lead Art Sparks and Mystical Fairies.
Jordan Shamp is a graduate of Carolina Friends School ('99) and a graduate of Appalachian State University ('04) with a degree in Physical Education. Jordan has been teaching Summer Sports since 2002, and is currently teaching physical education full-time at Lerner Jewish Community Day School in Durham. Jordan also continues to coach the upper school varsity boys basketball team at Carolina Friends School.
Abby Snow is returning for her sixth year this summer to teach in the C arolina Friends’ community. She hails from sunny Orlando, Florida where she worked as an Elementary Exceptional Education teacher as well as the translator for the school. She moved back to NC and presently works in the Chapel Hill School District as a special ed teacher. Abby graduated from Carolina University with a Bachelor’s degree in both Special Education and Spanish. She is fully bilingual in Spanish and loves to dance, read, camp, ride horses, and work with kids. She is the mother of 3-year-old Sebastien. As a result of MANY years of active girl scouting, summer camping, and working with kids, she has a very easy-going personality, great rapport with the kids, a WIDE range of knowledge and expertise over a broad area of topics and activities, and she will be sure to keep your little adventurers busy having fun, building interest, and actively learning more about the world around them. Abby will lead Cooking 101, Princess of the Forest, Pirates Aboard! and Back to Basic Skills.
Zack Ward/DSI Comedy Theater has been performing and directing comedy professionally for over a decade. Executive Producer and Artistic Director of DSI Comedy Theater, Founder and Executive Producer of North Carolina's Dirty South Improv Festival, Chapel Hill native and proud Carolina graduate, Zach has also been employed as Associate Producer for the Chicago Improv Festival (2003-2006) and Director of Education for ComedySportz Chicago (2003-2004). Zach has received critical acclaim from the Chicago Reader and the Chicago Tribune for his performance with DUAL EXHAUST (Critic's Choice, Highly Recommended, Super Cage Match Champion 2003-2004, Top 10 "Most Influential Comedy Duos of the Past Decade") and THE BEATBOX (Critic's Choice, Best Bet, Chicago Improv Festival w/ MADtv's Mo Collins). Zach can currently be seen performing with MISTER DIPLOMAT and COMEDYSPORTZ North Carolina at the DSI COMEDY THEATER in Carrboro. Zach has studied the art of improvisation with Todd Stashwick (Burn Mahattan), Mick Napier and Susan Messing (Annoyance), Bob Dassie, Craig Cackowski and TJ Jagodowski (ImprovOlympic), Matt Besser (Upright Citizens Brigade), Amy Poehler (Saturday Night Live), Michael Gelman (Second City), and with every student he teaches. Susan Wells is a locally and nationally recognized studio potter and sculptress. She has a BA from Warren Wilson College and has attended Penland School of Crafts as a student and assistant numerous times. Among other awards, Susan received Sotheby’s Award for Outstanding Work. Susan is the founder of Rising Earth Sculptures that creates large-scale clay sculptures fired on site. She feels honored to teach children and adults at various ceramics studios in the Triangle area. Susan has been the teacher in the Lower School After Hours for the past 4 years and is famous for creating young inventors, gardeners, artists, and green vegetable eaters! She began teaching camps at CFS many years ago and never tires of sharing clay with children. This summer Susan will host pottery camps Summer Clayfor ages 10 - 12 and Clay Crazy. Tim Wells has taught at Carolina Friends Middle School for 11 years and five years at Campus Early School. In addition to starting the Adventures program many years ago, he has enjoyed working with Summer Programs at CFS for several seasons offering a variety of different camp experiences (from arts and crafts to hiking to capture the flag to slimy science to wall climbing). With a large bag of tricks and grounded in the CFS philosophy, Tim will teach Riverwalking and Fort Building.
Donovan Zimmerman, an experienced puppeteer and artist, for the past 12 years has concentrated on making large puppets, paper mache masks, and producing plays. Donovan is our Pied Piper of children in the summer. During the year he works with Paperhand Puppet Intervention (www.paperhand.org). Donovan will lead Mask & Puppets.
