Workshops

Art to Wear  
Jean Cerasani Session 6 • July 21-25 FULL
Ages 8-11  
$195 per week  
Take your favorite jeans and a T-shirt and transform them into a work of Art to Wear. Express YOURSELF artistically. First, we'll add embellishments or cut away shapes. Then we use paints, dyes, needle and thread, anything to create an expressive piece of art that can be worn. Add a hat and we stage a fashion show at the end of camp. If you have enrolled in the Batik class you may want to use some of your dyed work in this class. Come learn some great skills and tips for personalizing your wardrobe.

Abby Snow Session 6 • July 21-25 FULL
Ages 8-11

Join Abby as you refine your skills to be self-sufficient and more independent. We’ll work on making baskets out of natural supplies, making candles, making recycled candle holders, soap-making and the use of herbs for natural remedies. You’ll learn how to create new objects from scratch and how to create new uses for old products. Our goals are to get down to the basics and live with less, and also learn some fundamental skills.

If you missed the first drama camp Susan offered, “Totally Theatrical,” here is your chance to get in on the action and make the first cut! Make sure to sign up early as these classes fill fast - everyone loves to be on stage! We work on developing your acting skills by playing theater games, doing exercises to warm up, and practicing vocal exercises. We will follow the same procedure as in Totally Theatrical. The highlight of both weeks is the performance! See you on stage!

Batik Blast

Batik is an ancient art form using wax to protect parts of cloth from dye exposure. We will use this method combined with other fabric dyeing methods to create unique and intriguing designs. Campers can create patches for clothing collages, art to wear tee shirts, pillow cases, wall hangings, a new cape for the dog... the possibilities are limitless and the radiant colors a delight. You will work with fabric provided as well as items you bring from home. As the process is simple, campers will often have several projects going on at the same time.

BodyMind Camp for Girls

Ages 8-11

Let's become more knowledgeable about our bodies through yoga, dance and hooping. This is a workshop of discovery and practice. We will relax and pamper ourselves while cultivating our sense of smell, crafting eye pillows with dried flowers and learning about essential oils. While not exactly a “spa”, we’ll learn some methods of relaxation, yoga for body strength and flexibility, and hooping for cardio and balance. This camp will be fun, varied and contain tasty treats. Yum!

Camp Invention  
Camp Invention Program Session 8 • August 4-8 CALL Camp Invention

The Camp Invention Program is a weeklong summer enrichment program that fosters creativity, teamwork, inventive-thinking skills, and science literacy. There are five modules that the campers will rotate through: Problem Solving on Planet Zak, Spills and Chills, Imagination Point, and I Can Invent. Campers will need to register through Camp Invention campinvention.org . Do not send registration for this particular camp to CFS.
Hours: 9 am to 3:30 pm. Campers needing Extended Day should use CFS registration forms just for extended day requests. Camp Invention participants may opt for extended day morning (8 am to 9 pm $18) and/or afternoon extended day til 5:30 ($40) or both ($55).There is no 4:00 pick up option.

Clay Crazy

Do you like getting your hands dirty? How about working with Play Dough and sand castles at the beach? Then join us and we’ll make sculptures and learn how to light a sawdust kiln to smoke fire your work. You will develop basic clay work techniques that humans have been using for thousands of years. Come ready to create and set your mind free as you mold and sculpt to your imagination. Afternoons offer the choice of playing outdoor games or working on projects while listening to stories. Some projects may need to be picked up the following week due to the firing process.

Climate Crunch:Building for the Future

Will the Earth get warmer? Will the Earth get colder? Can we do anything about it? In this camp we will learn how meteorologists measure and predict the weather. Then we will build houses out of LEGOS, clay, and wood to find out how we can stay warm or get cool. Energy efficiency is on the top of our minds as we install different types of roofs, insulation, doors and windows. What if you like going to the beach? We will build beach houses in our own "water world" and make sure the waves don't knock them down. What if you live in the West? We will simulate earthquakes and try to build a house that can withstand a moving earth. Join us for a week of future-minded building.

Cooking 101

Learn the basics of cooking: sauté, chop, grind, mince, baste, measure and … eat! There’s something cooking in the kitchen each day and the beaters are humming. We will learn traditional cooking methods (over the campfire/Dutch oven/etc.) as well as learning some foreign foods: Costa Rican/traditional Spanish cooking (tamales, beans/rice/etc.), as well as some Italian, French (crépes). Also we’ll do entreés, appetizers, breakfast foods, lunch, snack, dinners, desserts. By week’s end, you should be ready to be the executive chef in your own kitchen, leaving others to wash the dishes! Yum! Zacki will focus on food and
design and table design. Her specialties are Thai, Vietnamese,Iranian, Mexican, and
Pakistani. Some etiquette practice will be part of her camp. Field trips to a local garden
and grocery store may take place, weather and time permitting.

Creating Labyrinths

Join us for a magical adventure as we learn the mythology, history, and art of labyrinth making and use. With a wide assortment of natural materials including paper, chalk, sand, clay, stone, glass, shells, and wood, we will create and use 2D and 3D three and seven-circuit labyrinths of our own. Stretching back thousands of years and across the globe, labyrinths are circuits or pathways leading to and from a central point. Although they’re guaranteed to never get you lost, you’ll never come out the same way you went in. Try it and see!

Computer Crazies!  It’s not just about video games!  Get a jump and gain control of the machine…we will work on creating our own brochures, newsletters, flyers…use drawing tools and create our own watermarks.  Learn how to make a table, use Excel to make pie charts, take photos and create a slide show using Powerpoint with music clips. 

First, we will help you come up with an idea then create the projects.  Maybe you want to create some flyers, make a scrapbook, write stories, sort and arrange a collection....or just get a better feel for using the computer as a tool to help you.

This is the first step to then getting into Web Design, creating movies, producing scripts and stories…we’ll help you expand what you already know and show you some new techniques.  We’ll take some Capture the Flag breaks, foosball escapades, and catch the shows on Friday (Comedy, Masks and Puppets, Clay, etc).  Stop just staring at the screen….use the machine!  Come join us for a cyber tech tour.


DSI Comedy Camp

The classic comedy offering, DSI Comedy Theater (www.dsicomedytheater.com) teaches the games played on ABC’s “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” and “ComedySportz®” stages across the country. Comedy Camp improv comedians will learn the fundamentals of improvisationby exploring creativity, teamwork, and agreement. Young actors will build theater skills through scene and character work. You will also prepare an improv comedy performance for family and friends (and the whole CFS Summer Camp) for Friday afternoons.

DaVinci Dynamos

Are you fascinated by robots, planes, and ships? Bring them with you as we explore the inventions of Leonardo DaVinci. We’ll discover how to make fun and useful inventions of our own. From using simple machines and everyday found objects, to making weird concoctions and creating tools, we’ll learn the concepts of energy, force, and work. To recreate some of DaVinci’s most interesting inventions with some enhancements of our own, using our imaginations, toys and games, inspiration from modern day inventors, and a multi-step invention process, we’ll make our own wild and wonderful creations to solve everyday problems. Architects, inventors, both males and females, all welcome!

Design Technology

Design Technology is a workshop designed for students who like to build. In this camp we will learn about energy and ways of storing and using it. We will learn about and experiment with simple machine concepts and parts. We will build a number of artifacts requiring the students to design aspects of projects and use a variety of tools to build them. We will learn about and utilize electrical components such as motors, switches, capacitors, and diodes. Please call for availability as this camp fills quickly.

Drum Flow

Be a part of the groove with the Drum Flow squad. Explore the universal language of music through hand-drumming. Learn about musical conversation and why listening is the most important ingredient for a good jam. We’ll provide great beats for the hoop dancers in a collaborative effort with the Hoop Flow camp. The drummers and hoop-dancers will combine forces for a Friday performance. Bring a hand drum if you have one; we’ll also use a wide variety of other percussion instruments to add to our creations. Beginners encouraged and welcome!!

Fiber Artisans

Learn about traditional (and some new) portable tools and methods to create useful objects from animal and plant fibers. Specific activities will include washing and dyeing wool, making and using hand spindles to make yarn, felting, ropemaking, and building and weaving on a portable loom. We'll also make a rope bridge ! HOLD ON!

Forts, hideouts, camps, secret places – building structures outdoors is challenging and fun. Find out how to use natural materials to create a simple survival structure. Discover why certain grasses and tree materials work better than others do for building and offering protection from rain, heat, and cold. Finally, make a small model of your “dream fort” to take home with you for future outdoor backyard building projects. Wear old clothing and comfortable shoes! Tick protection may be needed.

Hoop Flow

Experience the hoop movement that will engage your entire body while cultivating a connection with rhythm and creative expression. Hooping can be a form of exercise, meditation, an enchanting dance or simply good fun. You will craft your own hoops, learn lots of cool moves, explore dazzling effects (like black lights!) and combine forces with the drum camp (see above) for a rich rhythmic experience. We’ll take our hoops out into the community to inspire a little fun and get others moving. Hooping can make you smile, but beware: you just may fall in love with “the flow.”

Masks & Puppets

Join local artist and puppet maestro of Paperhand Puppet Intervention for a week of full
on creative immersion in the puppetry arts. Participants will be engaged and encouraged
on many levels from conception to completion of a puppet show for all ages to enjoy at the
end. This is a once a summer opportunity to have your child work and play with a seasoned
art teacher and professional puppeteer. Don’t miss it!

Mosaics

Come create your own art forms using mosaic tiles, old dishes, and ceramic pieces. Campers can choose to redesign table tops, make mini paver murals, and create their own mosaic ideas. The sky is the limit on what we can make using recycled materials and mosaic pieces. On Friday, new creations will star in our art show for parents and friends. Campers can bring broken dishes and tiles as well as stepping stones to add to the collection.

Outdoor Art

With plywood as our canvas, garden art can be anything you dream. Moon and stars, sunshine and flowers, maybe a creature of your own design watching over your garden. With a little drilling, sanding, acrylic paints and our imaginations, we will create outdoor garden paintings.... the possibilities are endless. Campers will be able to install their creations in their own backyard gardens after our Friday afternoon art show.

Pirates Aboard!

Arg me matie! Join our crew as we sail in search of adventure. We’ll begin our quest by recounting old pirate tales. We’ll include some from our own North Carolina shores, choose our pirate names, create our unique costumes to exemplify our new persona, then split into two crews. We’ll scavenge the territory to collect and hide our treasures. Then to cover our tracks, we’ll devise our own coded map for the secret location and conceal that as well! The crews will then challenge each other with riddles and clues to see who can locate the maps first and find the TREASURE! This is our third pirate summer!

Princess of the Forest

Step into the forest where the focus is both on community building and on the ancient and global lore of strong women who work well with nature. We’ll learn how to identify plants, work with edible and medicinal plants, and learn from the forest. There will be singing as well as creating facials and herbal treatments with real plants and mud from what we harvest and make from the forest. We’ll weave and create our own art forms from natural materials. Prepare to do some light trekking.

Give new life to the old.... worn and gently used wood furniture, decorations and knick-knacks. Start hunting now at thrift stores, yard sales even your local dump for pieces you would like to revive. Prepare to get dirty... sanding, painting and maybe knocking a few nails. Whatever you fancy, a tiger on a chair or a polka-dot frame. Together with acrylic paints and our imaginations, we can create new life into the old! Bring your vintage pieces to camp on the first day. We'll also have some pieces for you to work on, but your own additions of chairs, tables, candlesticks, picture frames, bookcases, desks, etc. are yours to take home.

Riverwalking is learning through exploration, multi-sensory in a hands-on, intense and challenging week outdoors: hot, sweaty, dirty, and fun! We will spend a majority of each day at New Hope Creek or the Eno River. Lessons include: How does erosion impact aquatic flora and fauna? What do stilt grass, river oats, tulip poplar, and sourwood have in common? What’s it feel like to spend a long, hot day hiking and hopping into a creek? Heavy to moderate trekking.

Shaping Space

Come explore design concepts of space and shape in many different ways, using guided movement and dance with props and with partners and 2 and 3 D art activities. You’ll also explore four basic architectural ways of thinking about space/shape. Throughout the day expect vigorous movement and group activities with quieter individual art activities, pacing the energy throughout the day. Perfect for the artist or dancer or someone wanting movement and art!

The focus is on learning a sport for the fun of playing it and hopefully keeping up this skill throughout your life. Come experience a wide variety of sports. We will play basketball, basic soccer, indoor games, and, of course, Capture the Flag! We’ll be learning rudimentary rules of the game, technique and skills, and team building. We also have awesome foosball “tournaments!!” Wear shorts, tee shirts, and appropriate athletic shoes. All activities take place in our air-conditioned gym and on our outdoor playing fields (using cooler morning temperatures). Sports experience not necessary! All levels are welcome! Non-competitive.

The spotlight is on you! Calling all actresses, actors, and directors to help us put on a play! To help develop your acting skills, we play theater games, do warm ups, and practice vocal exercises. The first week starts with play development -- creating characters and dialogue. Next, throw in some friends for interaction. Then we put them in a place, give them a problem, and help them solve it. The second week we stage the play while creating sets, costumes, and props. Then we invite family, friends, and other campers to attend a special performance on Friday! Enroll early as this class fills f-a-s-t!
